The Antique Portrait Painting, Portrait of a Group of Elegantly Dressed People while in a park playing a game

of chess, an oil painting on canvas, from the Second Half of the Nineteenth Century. Italian Antiquity.

It is a portrait representing the aristocratic society of 19th century France who in their free time

playing, and strolling around dressed in 19th century clothing.

The work is dated 1883 and signed at lower right F. Baratti Paris, Italian painter of genre scenes,

urban scenes and orientalist.

Filippo Baratti (1846- 1936) was born in Trieste, but little is known about his life. It is known that in 1868

exhibited a painting at the Esposizione di Belle Arte in Milan. There are many exhibitions he held

from 1869 to 1872 at the ‘Società Promatirice di Bella Arte’ in Turin.

Many of this artist's works have an Orientalist theme and became one of the main representatives

of this style in Italy. He lived in Paris between 1870 and 1880, then for five years in London where

he began to paint cityscapes. He then returned to Paris where he remained until the end of 1900.

The antique painting is dressed in a gilded frame from the 19th century.

The frame and the oil painting are carefully and professionally restored.
